The Youth Institute of Science and Technology (YIST) School of Agogo, Ghana-West Africa, launched the country’s first University Bound Program. Sponsored by Garden City University College located in Kenyasi, Ghana; the YIST University Bound Program is a four week residential academic program for youth eight through sixteen.

Our “How I Spent My Summer” continues with Xylecia Taylor, a third-grade teacher at Dobbs Elementary. Taylor used her Fund for Teachers grant (through the Atlanta Education Fund) for a trip to Ghana, where she was involved in a range of activities including learning how to harvest bio-diesel fuel. Here’s her story, in her own words …

In a struggling neighborhood of cracked concrete, low-rent homes and delayed dreams, students plant a lush garden to feed their neighbors and feel a connection to their African roots.

 I first met Akosua Boateng back in 2004 when she was looking for a location to put her school.  She was then a virtual virgin to Ghana, bubbling with ideas and a well of energy that is usually sucked dry long before newcomers get their first idea off the ground.  I shared her enthusiasm, but with a tea spoon of salt.  I had seen her type before and only prayed she wasn’t too dismayed at the end of the day.

New artists, film projects, philanthropic endeavors, and solid results for sponsors marked a year of growth and success for Boogie Down Nima Productions (BDN).

A hit documentary called "Black To Our Roots" follows a group of Atlanta teens who travel to Ghana for the first time.

 
Students of the Girls Institute of Science and Technology School (GIST), Agogo have benefited from a workshop on effective and environmentally friendly sources of power generation.

Through random acts of kindness the next generation of leaders, scientists, teachers and more are able to pursue thier dreams.
