The Youth Institute of Science & TechnologySchool in Agogo, Ghana consists of four components:
Year-round Academic Program provides a rigorous instruction and tutoring for students while maintaining standards set by Ghana Education Service. Our exceptional curriculum explores the following additional six courses: Integrated Science, Oral Fluency, Reading Comprehension, Computer Applications, African Aesthetics, Global Studies and Math & Entrepreneurship. Girls Institute of Science & Technology Program develops the leadership and communal power of young women through the integration and application of an intense science, mathematics, health and technology based curriculum. This innovative educational program provides opportunities for leadership and encourages young women to develop their skills by creating an enjoyable, supportive, and collaborative environment.
YIST Upward Bound Program is a four-week summer program that provides a residential university experience. Students spend 4 weeks at Garden City University College campus in Kenyase, Ghana during July-August. Students take project-based extra classes to enhance skills in science, mathematics, technology and entrepreneurship. All activities and course work support the on-going research arm of YIST and provide academic and career counseling, postsecondary orientation and preparation and a variety of motivational and cultural enrichment activities.
YIST Diasporan & Culture Exchange Program provides opportunities for youth to learn the history and impact of Pan-Africanism and the MAAFA through various partnerships. Partners include AFTA (Africa for the Africans Tours and Investments), HABESHA (Helping Africa to Build & Establish Schools at Home and Abroad) and Help (Helping to Educate and Liberate People) Inc.org of Atlanta, Georgia and UMASS-Amherst Afro-American Studies & STPEC(Social Thought & Political Economy) departments. Through HABESHA Program, students from Atlanta, Georgia visit students at YIST-Agogo and collaborate on service learning projects. UMASS-Amherst students spend their semesters immersed in service learning work. Service-learning is a teaching and learning approach that integrates community service with academic study to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities ands-on/minds-on practical experience in both laboratory and field environments.
YIST-HighSchool site is located at Ejisu-Abenase. YIST-Ejisu will provide mentorship programs, workforce readiness awareness, and project-based learning experiences using information technology to address a variety of social, effective, cognitive, and academic outcomes necessary for admission to university and postsecondary success. The official opening of the school will take place during September 2010.
